The Mission

Believing in its value in our lives, the Winston Institute of Arts' mission is to enhance the quality of life in the Detroit community through art, education and entertainment.

Founder... John D. Winston


Mr. Winston has been entrusted with a special vision. 

His vision to educate, as well as motivate, students from the Detroit metropolitan area to succeed in the performing arts is a major undertaking, one to which he has fully dedicated his life.  His belief in the importance of students utilizing their God-given talents in the arts is expressed in the Institute's mission itself.  He is the parent of two young children, as well as an educator, and is uniquely qualified to accomplish this mission.  

Mr. Winston serves as a member of the WIA Board and is Founder/Executive Director of Education for the Institute. He is also an instructor.  He holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Wayne State University and a Master of Education in Administration from Walden University.

Mr. Winston also holds certifications from the Motion Picture Institute of Michigan and the Recording Institute of Detroit.   He has over 20 years experience in performing arts, including individual and group instrumental and vocal instruction for elementary through high school age students. He also has eight years experience as a teacher in the Detroit Public Schools.  He has composed over 100 songs for artists, both national and international. He has also composed music major motion pictures as well as commercials.

Mr. Winston is the founder of the Kids First Athletic League (KFAL) of Detroit, which services over 500 student athletes annually.  He has been a recording artist on Arista and Polygram Records and a staff producer on Atlantic Records and has proudly served our country as a saxophone player in the United States Army Band.
